Treasure Trails have several requirements depending on the clue that you get, such as defeating a level 74 Zamorak, solving a puzzle, etc. http://www.tip.it/runescape/?page=treasure_trails.htm
To do a Treasure Trail you have to obtain a Clue Scroll drop from a monster and the clue will be on the Clue Scroll once you open it up. http://www.runehq.com/RHQItemView.php?id=1234
As for the "big hammer-like weapon" you may be talking about a one of the five Mauls in RuneScape. http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Maul
